Proteolysis is typically catalysed by cellular enzymes called proteases, but may also occur by intra-molecular digestion. Uncatalysed, the hydrolysis of peptide bonds is extremely slow, taking hundreds of years. Proteolysis is the breakdown of proteins into smaller polypeptides or amino acids.
